As Countdown to 2030 is launched, a supplement in the British Medical Journal published 12th September 2016, maps the challenges and opportunities for the SDG era. The supplement, entitled Countdown to 2015 country case studies: analysing progress towards maternal and child survival in the Millennium Development Goal era reflects on the successful country case studies that illuminated the progress and gaps during the MDGs, and charts the new ground that Countdown to 2030 will cover.  Accountability remains prominent on the global health agenda thanks in part to the evidence and analysis published by Countdown to 2015.  As the papers in this supplement show, the research that the new Countdown undertakes will be more relevant, sophisticated, and rooted in developing countries where the evidence is urgently needed.  The supplement will be presented and discussed at the 5th Annual Women’s & Children’s Health Accountability Breakfast Sunday, 18 September 2016 in New York and again at a panel discussion 16th November 2016 during the 4th Global Symposium on Health Systems Research in Vancouver.
