The Countdown to 2030 project conducted a data analytics training workshop on reproductive, maternal, and child health indicators in Mogadishu, Somalia, from December 10 to 11, 2024.
The training, aimed at enhancing data analysis skills, brought together members of the Countdown Somalia country collaboration team from the Ministry of Health and the Capital University of Somalia. The workshop focused on strengthening understanding of health intervention coverage across socioeconomic status, gender, education, and geography. It also explored key drivers of change, such as policy, financing, and other health system dimensions relevant to reproductive, maternal, and child health in Somalia.
Participants engaged in sessions covering routine health facility data extraction, management, analysis, interpretation, and visualization of complex health data. These skills are critical for generating actionable insights to inform health policy development and program improvement.
By the end of the training, participants were equipped with analytical skills using Stata software and applying the Countdown to 2030 approach to estimate the coverage of maternal and child health indicators using denominators derived from routine facility data.
Participants applied the knowledge and skills gained from the training to analyze and interpret routine health facility data to estimate and monitor maternal and child health services in Somalia. On December 12, 2024, they disseminated the findings to key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Health, UNICEF, and WHO. These findings are expected to inform policy formulation and programming to improve reproductive, maternal, and child health outcomes in Somalia.
Countdown remains committed to supporting data analysis and capacity strengthening efforts in 26 Global Financing Facility African-supported countries. This includes implementing innovative regional approaches that contribute to global progress monitoring.
This year, Somalia, Mauritania, Central Africa Republic, and Madagascar joined the Countdown to 2030 initiative.
