From October 15 -17, 2024, the Countdown to 2030 project team conducted a technical support supervision visit to Liberia’s Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Institute of Population Studies-University of Liberia (IPS-UL), aimed to improve data quality and promote data use in health decision-making.
On Tuesday, October 15, Peter Kaberia and Ronald Kananura Muhumuza from the Countdown team attended and supported the dissemination of key findings from the Maternal Health and Vaccination Analysis Reports. These reports were produced through rigorous data analysis with financial support from GAVI, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), and the Global Financing Facility (GFF).
The Liberia Assistant Minister for Vital Statistics, Liberia Director of Health Information Management System (HMIS), representatives from the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and Development, Ministry of Education, GFF, UNICEF, and other partners were in attendance.
The Liberia Countdown country collaboration team, led by the MOH through the Expanded Program on Immunization and the IPS, presented findings on the progress and current status of maternal and child health in Liberia and how these findings inform the next steps in developing the Liberia’s investment case.
Throughout the dissemination, emphasis was placed on the importance of data use and the critical role of stakeholders in ensuring that quality health data is collected, analyzed, and disseminated at all levels to inform decision-making.
On October 16, 2024, the Countdown team facilitated an introductory workshop focused on CD2030’s systematic approach to analyzing maternal and child health indicators. The workshop targeted data managers, analysts, processors, and demographers from both the Ministry of Health and the IPS-UL, with the aim of building in-country capacity for health data analytics.
Through this approach, Countdown seeks to strengthen the analytical capacity of national institutions, enabling timely and robust data collection, management, analysis, contextual interpretation, and reporting of findings.
On the final day, October 17, 2024, the team held a productive discussion with the Ministry of Health and IPS, exploring potential areas for future collaboration and support.
