Strengthening Knowledge Translation to Improve Maternal and Child Health in Somalia

From October 27 – 30, 2025, the Countdown to 2030 initiative conducted a capacity-strengthening workshop on reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (RMNCAH) knowledge translation in Mogadishu, Somalia.
The training workshop aimed at strengthening the in-country team’s capacity to communicate research findings for policy and advocacy purposes. It included hands-on training in synthesizing and disseminating findings using the Countdown to 2030 approach and tools.
By the end of the training, the participants applied the knowledge and skills gained to develop various  knowledge products. They wrote strong manuscript sections, synthesized and interpreted findings from their analyses, created effective data visualizations and tables, selected journals, followed publication ethics, and formulated action plans to complete and submit manuscripts after the training.
They also developed various knowledge products for sharing with policymakers. On October 27, 2025, they shared the findings with key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Health, UNICEF, and WHO. These findings are expected to inform policy and programming to improve reproductive, maternal, and child health outcomes in Somalia.
Countdown remains committed to generating evidence to foster advocacy and accountability for the health of women, children, and adolescents. We analyze data on coverage of health interventions across socioeconomic status, gender, education, and geography, as well as on key drivers of change, such as policy, finance, and other health system dimensions.
Such workshops are held to bridge the bridge the research-practice gap, improve health outcomes, empower decision makers, and accelerate impact.
